Measure the shirt, not your body, for this chart

Lay a well-fitting shirt flat without stretching it. The 5180 specification measures chest width one inch below the armhole. Body length is measured at the back from the high point of the shoulder to the finished hem. Compare the same points on your shirt.

Some Hanes shopping pages show a body-chest size range instead. A body circumference and a laid-flat garment width describe different things. Do not enter a body-chest measurement into the width column or assume that doubling a shirt's width tells you the body size it will comfortably fit.

What changes between sizes?

In this specification, medium measures 20 by 29 inches and large measures 22 by 30 inches: the large adds 2 inches of flat width and 1 inch of length. The length increment is not identical throughout the range; XL to 2XL goes from 31 to 33 inches. Check the actual row rather than extending a pattern.

Does Hanes Beefy-T fit true to size?

That phrase depends on which shirt you use as a reference and how much room you prefer. Compare an existing garment's dimensions first.
