Polyester can shrink with excessive heat, but pure polyester usually changes little when washed and dried according to its care label. A cotton-polyester blend may behave differently from 100% polyester. Check the fiber label and care instructions before choosing a wash cycle.

Does polyester shrink in the dryer?
High heat increases the risk of unwanted changes. If the garment permits tumble drying, use its recommended setting. Air drying is an alternative when the label allows it. A sports jersey or printed shirt may need different care from an undecorated polyester item.
How to wash a polyester shirt
- Read the care label, including any instructions supplied for the printed design.
- Choose a compatible wash cycle and detergent. Treat a stain according to the garment and detergent instructions.
- Use the permitted drying method; do not assume a high-temperature cycle is harmless because the fiber is synthetic.
- After the shirt is dry, compare it with its earlier measurements if you are checking a change in fit.
Can you deliberately shrink polyester?
Heat is not a reliable way to turn a polyester shirt into a predictable smaller size. The result may be uneven or affect the print and fabric. For a new custom order, choose the correct garment measurements before printing. For an existing shirt, consider whether a different size or professional alteration is practical rather than repeatedly increasing wash and dryer heat.
How much will a blend shrink?
There is no single percentage that can be applied to every blend. Fiber percentages, construction, prior finishing, and laundry conditions differ. This guide does not claim a measured shrinkage rate or report staff laundering tests.
For example, if a shirt measures 20 inches across before washing and 19.5 afterward using the same method, the width changed by 2.5%. That is an arithmetic example, not a forecast for polyester or any product. Measure length separately; width and length need not change by the same amount.
Choose the right fit before printing
Use the model-specific Hanes chart or Comfort Colors 1717 chart when comparing cotton alternatives. If you are choosing custom sweatshirts or hoodies, inspect the selected product’s fiber blend and size information separately.
