Colors

You definitely need a good selection of colors to have a good looking shirt. This not only means the color on your design, but also how well it complements the color of your shirt. If your design uses a lot of colors, it will usually come out better on lighter shirts than on darker shirts. Designs with solid colors are cheaper, and come out better than designs with shaded colors or gradients.

Picture Quality

If you uploaded your own pictures for your shirt design, make sure that they are at least 300dpi (dots per inch). While a lower resolution image may look alright on your screen, chances are it become pixelated once it's been expanded to fit your shirt.

Depending on how and when you plan on wearing your shirt could affect the type of custom design you decide to put on it.
