New Year's Eve celebrations get more and more extravagant every year. As a child I remember simply banging pots and pans with a wooden spoon when the clock struck midnight. More recently, I've seen all sorts of eyeglasses in the shape of the coming year, decorations, fancy noisemakers and sparklers.
